Trade Me Find: Scorpion Kit Car
In keeping with the tradition of home built cars, this week's Trade Me find is a very cool and very rare 1988 Scorpion Kit Car.
The Scorpion, also known as the Purvis Eureka or Nova, is a radical looking car that is constructed by the owner themselves as a "kit car". Scorpion/Eureka/Nova's can be powered by a range of engines but was originally designed to be powered by Volkswagen's ubiquitous flat four engine. These car's were produced from 1971 to 1991 with only a few hundred produced.
This particular Scorpion was built in 1988 and rocks some awesome period SCORPION decals on the front and rear. The styling of these cars is reminiscent of old group 5 sports cars and has a similar front shape to the De Tomaso Pantera. A defining feature of these cars is the fighter jet style opening roof which is used to gain access to the cockpit instead of doors which is truly rad. Imagine rolling up to a fancy restaurant in this and jumping out the roof. Awesome!
The Scorpion is incredibly low as seen from this picture of it next to a Smart car and will probably draw more attention than a Lamborghini due to it's unique road presence.
Inside the Scorpion are some really comfy looking bucket seats, a sweet looking sports steering wheel and a minimalistic dashboard. It must feel like a go kart sitting so low to the ground!
The car is powered by a twin carb 1.8 litre Volkswagen flat four with the original 1.5 litre flat four also coming with the car. Other things that come with the car are 3 Volkswagen manuals, 6 period car magazines featuring Scorpion's, the original assembly book and other things related to the car. The car is in Maungaturoto with an asking price of $15,500 which is a reasonable price for such a cool car.
