NZ Motorsport: Trentham Autocross

Two weeks ago, the team at Home Built NZ entered the Hutt Valley Motorsport Club's "LeMons" fundraising autocross. We entered in a cheap and cheerful 1995 Nissan Sentra S which just so happens to be the most absolute base model you could buy, with the GA14DS 1.4 litre twin cam 16 valve motor.

The Sentra handled the autocross better than expected and recorded a 1:22 by the end of the day which is pretty good for a poverty spec, bog standard car.

There was no shortage of Nissan's either with Skyline's, Silvia's and our Sentra. Nissan's were also the most popular cars to break with the Dreamfactory Racing Supercharged Silvia S14 Facelift and Skyline R32 both hitting the kerb and breaking suspension bits.

The Sentra wasn't the only budget entry with this "OVERSIZE" Subaru Legacy wagon. This car was surprisingly quick and pulled some awesome handbrake skids.

This is a scene you could only truly see in New Zealand, a tiny Suzuki Capuccino lined up behind a big Subaru Legacy wagon. Priceless.

You may remember this car as the first car that Home Built NZ ever reviewed, the Supercharged 4AGZE powered Toyota Corolla. This was it's first ever event and it managed to get fifth place. It also sounded devilish thanks to it's side exit exhaust.

The autocross also attracted some exotica with cars such as this classic Porsche 911 having a go at the tight circuit.

Another previously reviewed car and one of Home Built NZ's favourite's, The Road Rat, also showed up and placed a respectable 17th.

The champion of the day was Vivian Eden in his Subaru WRX with a best time of 1:02. Overall, the Trentham Autocross is an excellent event and one well worth doing or even watching. Thanks for reading!!!
